Venetian Aperitivo Hour

When thinking of Venice, you may have idealized dreamy visuals of striped-shirt-wearing gondoliers navigating artfully-crafted boats through winding narrow waterways, but what about the food? Venetians, in addition to offering Italian cuisine similar to other parts of Italy, have their own culinary traditions--notably tapas-style snacks called cicchetti. Not dissimilar to tapas, or more-specifically pintxos, cicchetti are small bites of locally-crafted, seasonal products, usually served atop slices of bread, and are priced cheaply at around €1-€3. These varied snacks can be found at "cicchetterias" around the city, some highlighting a specific cicchetti specialty. Cicchetti are usually paired with local drink options such as Prosecco, a Venetian "Spritz" or "Ombra" -- local dialect for a small glass of wine. While the Italian concept of "aperitivo" usually applies to the hours leading up to dinner in other parts of Italy, Venetians serve cicchetti all day long -- It's definitely 17:00 somewhere!
