In the thirtyish years since they met as teenagers growing up in the Boston area, drummer Tomas Fujiwara and cornettist Taylor Ho Bynum have played hundreds of gigs in dozens of different bands and have recorded together on at least a couple dozen albums. They’ve developed their deep musical communication in groups under Fujiwara's leadership like Triple Double and Shizuko, ensembles led by Bynum including his Sextet, 9-tette, and PlusTet big band, and collective projects like Illegal Crowns (with Mary Halvorson and Benoit Delbecq) and the Thirteenth Assembly (with Halvorson and Jessica Pavone). Throughout all of it, they’ve regularly come back to the intimacy and immediacy of their duo, recording four albums along the way: "True Events" (2007), "Stepwise" (2010), "Through Foundation" (2014), and "Notice" (2022).
These days, Tomas hangs his hat in Brooklyn when not touring with his Seven Poets Trio, collectives Illegal Crowns and Thumbscrew, or bands lead by Mary Halvorson, Jessica Pavone and others. Taylor directs the Coast Jazz Orchestra at Dartmouth College and has recently appeared with Illegal Crowns, the Mali Obamsawin Sextet, Bill Lowe’s Signifyin’ Natives Ensemble, and the Fully Celebrated Orchestra.
We’re pleased that they’ll meet in the middle for the latest concert in the Dot Jazz Series, the presenting partnership of Mandorla Music and Greater Ashmont Main Street! Dot Jazz events take place in Peabody Hall at the Parish of All Saints on Ashmont Street in Dorchester. Free parking, steps from the Ashmont/Peabody Square MBTA station, good food and drink options nearby.
$15 in advance, $20 at the door. $10 for students at the door only. Kids under 18 free.
