Abraham Lincoln came into office while the South was planning to secede. By studying his first Inaugural address, the Gettysburg address, Emancipation Proclamation and his second Inaugural address we can learn how Lincoln approached slavery and the Civil War. We will compare and contrast it to Frederick Douglass' famous speech What to the Slave is the 4th of July. For the first meeting please read Frederick Douglass' What to the Slave is the 4th of July and Abraham Lincoln's first Inaugural address. Instructor: Howard Bernstein
