Artist Radcliffe Bailey stated, “I think music is my first form of DNA.” For many African American artists, music serves as a wayfinder, directing them through a fragmented past and inspiring creative improvisation.
Join Rose Art Museum staff Yasmine Vera and Madeleine Delpha for a virtual tour of works from re: collections, Six Decades at the Rose Art Museum that incorporate jazz, R&B, soul, and other Black musical traditions. Through images and performance clips, we will explore how artists Radcliffe Bailey, Jennie C. Jones, Jamal Cyrus, Betye Saar, and Whitfield Lovell draw inspiration from John Coltrane, James Brown, The Four Tops, and others, using music as a creative vehicle to reconstruct the past and imagine bold futures.
This talk is presented via ZOOM. Registration is required.
