Explore the endless possibilities of shadows in this three-hour workshop with Charlotte Lily Gaspard, shadow puppetry artist and director of Midnight Radio Show from New York City.
Shadows are a powerful performance element that can add visual depth and drama to your storytelling practice. We will begin with an overview of shadow puppetry styles, ranging from historical to contemporary approaches, to grasp the basic principles of shadow theater. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own simple paper-and-rod puppet, which we will use to explore incorporating shadow into narrative contexts. You are also welcome to bring a shadow puppet you have already made!
This workshop is especially rewarding for artists who are curious about using shadows in their work and those seeking to expand their understanding of shadow theater, which can include flat paper puppets, mask work, the body silhouette, and more. Bring your questions, curiosity, and a sense of play!
This is the first time Charlotte Lily Gaspard of Midnight Radio Show is visiting Puppet Showplace Theater — don’t miss the opportunity to learn from this New York-based artist!
Adults and teens 16+
Length: 3 hours
Mar 22 (Fri): 6:30 pm | 9:30 pm
About the Artist
Midnight Radio Show is a multi-disciplinary collective based in Brooklyn. Using handmade shadow puppets, live performance, video content, and an actual radio show, they broadcast real magical love to children of all ages. MRS is headed up by Charlotte Lily Gaspard, the artistic director, singer, narrator, and a bona fide fairy princess. Resident composers Ezra Bloom, Sabrina Chap, Jessie Davis, and Doc Frost craft original scores and songs for the shadow puppet stories, live cabarets, and recordings.
Charlotte Lily Gaspard (Creator/Performer) has been described as “part celestial creature, part sophisticated human,” by Enchanted Living Magazine. Shadow puppet artist, storyteller, and a “multi-faceted enchantress... the fanciful mastermind behind Midnight Radio Show” (Broadway World), Charlotte’s mission is to activate imaginations and celebrate playfulness wherever she goes. Along with puppets, Charlotte also creates costumes for theater and film, and leads puppetry and theater workshops all over New York City, and beyond.
