The tradition of book clubs in the US dates back to the early 19th century in New England, and there are more than 5 million book club members in the US today. CCAE is happy to introduce English students to this tradition by meeting regularly to read and discuss a book, its themes, characters, and related subjects. This term we’ll be reading Manhattan Beach by the Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Jennifer Egan. This historical novel set on the New York waterfront in the mid-20th century encompasses everything from family trauma to gangsters to shipbuilding, told from the point of view of a young woman working as a diver at a time when the docks, the city, and society are being transformed by the Second World War. Required book: Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan. Instructor: Joanne Nicklas
